CranioSacral Therapy is a hands-on therapy that releases restrictions in the body’s craniosacral system. This system is made up of the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord as well as the attached bones-including the skull, face, and jaw, which make up the cranium, and the tailbone area, or sacrum.
Restrictions in the craniosacral system can prevent the skull, spinal cord, and sacrum from moving properly, inhibiting the creation and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid. When your body goes through physical, emotional, or spiritual trauma, your fascia, a thin layer of tissue that acts like plastic wrap surrounding your muscles and organs, bunches-up into restrictions that prevent the body from working the way it is supposed to. CranioSacral Therapy encourages your body to “unwrap” the fascia, releasing the restrictions. This allows the bones in your skull and sacrum to move with the body’s natural craniosacral rhythm.
A properly functioning craniosacral system is an integral part of the body’s natural healing processes. Removing restrictions allows your body’s inner physician to self-correct and function better. CranioSacral Therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure because of its ability to bolster resistance to disease. It is effective in treating a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction such as headaches, back pain, and jaw pain. Not only can CranioSacral Therapy address recent restrictions and their resulting issues, it can also address longstanding issues, including those stemming from prenatal trauma and birth events.

There is no set number of sessions required to address specific restrictions or areas of concern. Everyone responds differently to CranioSacral Therapy. During a typical session, practitioners will evaluate the craniosacral rhythm at the beginning and end of the session to see how your body responds. The body’s natural healing process takes time and it can take up to three days for the body to fully respond to a session. When your practitioner feels you have achieved a lasting balance in the craniosacral rhythm, the practitioner may transition you to maintenance sessions, if needed.
CranioSacral Therapy was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.
